Celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage with the Mesquite Arts Council’s 9th annual Día de los Muertos Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 25.
This free, family-friendly Day of the Dead festival will be held from 4-7 p.m. inside the building and on the grounds of the Mesquite Arts Center and will feature cultural arts workshops, music, dancing, theatrical performances, food trucks and vendors.
Participate in a variety of free arts workshops including sugar skull yarn art with Poppy Xander, decorating authentic sugar skulls with Maggie Wolters, sugar skull sculpture and clay workshops with Christina Salazar, and papier-mâché sugar skull or butterfly creation with local artist Liliana Estrada and Hispanic Forum of Mesquite.
Other workshops include silk-screening with Durty Laundry Clothing, hat making with Rad Hatter, a bead workshop with Anita Sanchez, painting workshops with Cara Mia Theatre, and organic abstracts with Patricia Rodriguez.
During the event, Mesquite Arts Theatre will present the return of its “Haunted Theatre” immersive experience that combines the thrill of a haunted house with the excitement of live show. Those who attend the performance are encouraged to make a $5 donation to support local arts programming.
The festival also will feature live music by Mesquite ISD’s Mariachi Estrellas de Mesquite and DJ Storm; dance performances by Grupo Folklórico México Lindo and A Dance to Remember’s flamenco dancers.
Patrons also can shop with more than a dozen vendors in the “Hecho con Amor” market, and a variety of food trucks and concessions will be available for purchase.
