Mesquite, TX – April 28, 2021 – On Saturday, April 24 the Mesquite Police Department took part in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA), National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Police collected 13 boxes of unwanted prescription drugs for a total weight of 247 pounds. The drugs will be destroyed in a safe and secure manner.
The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health Issue. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.9 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that most abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often taken from the home medicine cabinet.
The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose related deaths. Mesquite police try to hold this event twice a year so Mesquite residents can get rid of any unwanted prescription drugs.
