Mesquite, TX – October 28, 2020 – Downtown Mesquite earned the prominent Texas Downtown Association (TDA) Best Traditional Promotion Event award for the Front Street Station groundbreaking celebration as well as the People’s Choice Award.
“Our volunteers worked in coordination with the City of Mesquite to make this a fun and informational event,” said Downtown Advisory Board Chairman Brad Brandt. “We are very proud of the work project co-chairs Belinda Epps and Lisa Haar put into coordinating the groundbreaking,” he added.
The groundbreaking was held in August 2019. Organizers designed the event to reflect how the project area would function once completed. Volunteers used spray chalk to outline every major feature of the entire project area. The event featured live music, interactive art, food vendors, information stations and an opportunity for the public to join in the groundbreaking with their own shovels. The $5.5 million Front Street Station infrastructure project is set for substantial completion in December.
The TDA sponsors the annual program to recognize outstanding downtown projects, places, and people of Texas. The association received 104 nominations in 10 different categories from communities across Texas in 2020. Judging panels consisting of experts in various professional fields conducted the President’s Awards Program to honor outstanding downtown revitalization projects throughout the state. Finalists were placed into a competition to compete for the People’s Choice Award in their category through a social media contest. Mesquite received 430 votes and the closest competitor received 205 votes.
Downtown Manager Beverly Abell said, “This award is added to a series of recent successes for the Downtown Mesquite program. New restaurant developments were announced recently and the program achieved National Accreditation earlier this year. In addition, Downtown Mesquite won two TDA awards in 2019 for the Spirit of Downtown Achievement Award and Best Economic Game Changer. With the help of volunteers, we continue to make news and achieve results. People are once again talking about Downtown Mesquite.”
