Mesquite, TX – September 22, 2020 – At the Sept. 21 City Council meeting, Council approved a resolution celebrating National Senior Center Month in September and committing to the continued support of services and programs at the City’s senior centers. The resolution also committed to supporting community-wide services for all senior citizens, encouraging all City residents to demonstrate compassion, highlighting how important senior services are and supporting resources that enrich the lives of Mesquite’s senior citizen population.
Here is the full resolution that was approved:
WHEREAS, every September is National Senior Center Month; and
WHEREAS, the national celebration of senior centers began in 1979 with Senior Center Week celebrated in May. The concept gained support of other aging organizations as well as the full Senate and the House Select Committee on Aging; and
WHEREAS, thanks to the U. S. Conference of Mayors Aging Task Force, numerous mayoral proclamations celebrated Senior Center Week, and in 1985, the first Senior Center Week Presidential Proclamation was signed by President Ronald Reagan; and
WHEREAS, the National Institute of Senior Centers are committed to supporting and strengthening the nation’s 11,000 senior centers through best practices, professional development, advocacy, research, and national standards and accreditation; and
WHEREAS, Mesquite’s senior citizen residents helped build our community, in which we enjoy today due to their hard work and sacrifices and are owed the respect and honor of every Mesquite resident.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MESQUITE, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the City Council supports the goals and ideals of the Parks and Recreation Department’s three senior centers that offer programming specifically for adults age 50+ with a variety of leisure time activities, services and educational opportunities for participants.
SECTION 2. That the City Council pledges to support community-wide services for all senior citizens that improve their quality of life that include food, transportation and other support programs.
SECTION 3. That the City Council encourages all City residents to demonstrate compassion and care to the senior citizen population of our community.
SECTION 4. That the City Council will continue to highlight how important senior services are to deliver vital connections to support older adults aging well and preventing social isolation.
SECTION 5. That the City Council supports resources that celebrate the mind, body, spirit and enrichment of the lives of Mesquite’s senior citizen population.
