Understanding Your Bill

Water Bill Sample

How are usage charges calculated on my bill?

The City of Mesquite bills customers for each 100 gallons of water used. A customer’s monthly charges are based on the number of gallons a customer uses during a billing period. When reading a customer’s meter (normally located in the parkway between the sidewalk and curb), the register of the meter is similar to an odometer which has incrementing numbers. To determine a customer’s water usage, the reading system records the number on the meter on the first day of the billing cycle. After 30 days, the reading system records the reading again. The first reading is then subtracted from the second reading to determine the customer’s water use, in gallons, for the month. In the example above, the previous reading, 91, is subtracted from the current reading, 130, which equals 39. Since the meter reads in hundreds (100x) of gallons, the actual water use is 3,900 for the month.
