    December 3, 2021, 8:00 PM - December 19, 2021, 10:00 PM

Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher, and even Santa Claus himself at Higbee's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out!" All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more! Tickets are on sale now!

  1. Santa Cop Toy Parade

    Family Cathedral of Praise

The Mesquite Police Santa Cop Toy Program is an annual event that began over 40 years ago. In 1975, Mesquite Police Officer Reese Bullard was assigned to a low income apartment complex and knew of several families that were unable to provide Christmas gifts for their children. Moved with compassion, he began a way for law enforcement to assist those families in need and vulnerable in their own community. This officer made arrangements for these families to receive Christmas gifts and each year the need grew. In 1982, the program went city wide. It has continued to grow each year. Last year the Santa Cop Program provided gifts for over 1,000 children from over 380 different families.

  2. Artist Reception Cathy Drennan

    December 4, 2021, 6:00 PM

    Mesquite Arts Center

Cathy Drennan’s art work is influenced by the patterns and colors of the world’s diverse cultures. Born in Texas and living around the world in Lebanon, Mexico, Iran and the Philippines has made a profound impression on her creative spirit. This current series “ReShape, ReColor, ReWork” starts by altering or skewing personal imagery, from photos of architecture both interior and exterior, changing the orientation of angles between line and form, resulting in a distortion of the perceived. This first skewing of the image serves as the base of her composition – shape/structure. This supports the second, the relationship of color. The relationship of color and how the viewer percieves it is significant to her process. The shape and color then support the third level -- layering of symbols, patterns and textures reworked from distinct traditions.

  3. Artist Reception JM Rizzi

    Mesquite Arts Center

JM Rizzi’s ceaselessly self-elaborating body of work skips, slides, and glides across surfaces, leaving polished paintings in its wake. The artist’s creations illustrate his own stream of consciousness while striking a profound resonance with viewers. Rizzi came of age in New York City during the transformative 1990s. His creative journey sprouted from the Lower East Side’s grittier days with a looping trail of spray paint that caught a life of its own and never looked back. The artist’s practice transcends the subcultures that nourished his creatively formative years. His paintings ask questions only to answer them moments later—an animated conversation between positive and negative space facilitated by rhythm.
