Mesquite City Council meets Nov. 18 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Ave. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B, followed by the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber. City Council takes Oath of Office


This week, an Oath of Office ceremony was held for the newly elected City Councilmembers which included Bruce Archer, Mayor; Kenny Green, District 2; Robert Miklos, District 3; Tandy Boroughs, District 4; B.W. Smith, District 5; and Dan Aleman, District 6. The runoff election for Council District 1 takes place Saturday, Dec. 14. More information.

Mesquite breaks ground on new Veterans Memorial


On Nov. 9, Mesquite broke ground on its new Veterans Memorial near City Lake Park. The memorial will honor all military veterans, their families and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Mesquite Police Department graduates six new recruits


Six new police officer recruits graduated from Mesquite Police Department’s Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) Nov. 8. This is the 12th class to complete the internal training program. This class includes the first Mesquite firefighters to complete the program to become arson investigators. The recruits include a former MPD dispatcher, a 21-year U.S. Marine veteran and a U.S. Army veteran. Learn more about BPOC 12.

Mesquite recognizes Texas Municipal Court Week


In celebration of Texas Municipal Court Week Nov. 4-8, Mesquite Municipal Court provided public safety resources to customers regarding the dangers of distracted driving. The City also marked the occasion by naming its 2019 Court Clerk of the Year, Yelena Kimble, and 2019 Deputy Marshal of the Year, Jeffrey Williamson. Read more.

New KidsQuest playground debuts Nov. 23


KidsQuest Playground reopens with a celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at Debusk Park. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., volunteers will assist with installing personalized pickets. The opening ceremony begins at noon followed by a free lunch at 12:30 p.m. Festivities conclude at 2 p.m. and the playground officially opens for play. Read more about KidsQuest 2.0.

Most City offices and facilities are closed for the Thanksgiving holiday Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29. Mesquite Animal Services and City recreation centers are open Nov. 29. There is no trash or recycling collection Nov. 28; however, trash collection will occur Nov. 29. View a complete list of closures.

City of Mesquite’s November sales tax receipts, which represent sales activity for the month of September, were 3.3% above the amount reported for the same period last year. Mesquite ended the 2018-19 fiscal year at 1.8% above last year’s collections. Sales tax contributes 27% of the total revenue used to support the City’s General Fund, which provides services such as police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries and public works.
