Thomasson Square Project - September 2018

Gus Thomasson Road (Karla Drive to Moon Drive) Reconstruction Project

The Plan: Reconstruction of Gus Thomasson Road from Karla Drive to Moon Drive. The reconstructed roadway will be a four-lane divided thoroughfare with the addition of a bicycle path, a wider sidewalk and other pedestrian improvements. In addition, drainage, water and sanitary sewer improvements are being constructed.

What's happening now: Paving is currently underway on Gus Thomasson Road. Remaining drainage and utility connections near Moon Drive are almost complete.

What's next: Traffic will be re-routed to southbound lanes (western lanes) in October. Construction of sidewalk, cycle track and on-street parking will continue. Service connections to new water mains and final connections of the storm sewer will be completed in upcoming weeks.

Estimated completion date: The project is scheduled to be completed summer of 2019.

Motley Drive (Gus Thomasson Blvd. to Town East Blvd.) Reconstruction Project

The Plan: Reconstruction of Motley Drive from Gus Thomasson Boulevard to Town East Boulevard. The reconstructed roadway will be a four-lane divided roadway on the north and south ends, and a two-lane divided roadway with some on-street parking through the residential area. In addition, there will be drainage, sanitary sewer and water improvements.

What's happening now: The contractor is working to install irrigation in the median in preparation of landscaping and completing the sidewalks and retaining walls. Efforts will now be focused on repairing the drainage ditch that will help protect the opposite stream bank from erosion by the newly installed drainage line.

What's next: Landscaping of the medians should begin in the next few weeks after irrigation has been installed. Oncor will begin installing street lights along the corridor.

Estimated completion date: Fall 2018

Town East - Skyline to Military September 2018

Town East Boulevard Phase 1 (Military Parkway to Skyline Drive) Reconstruction Project

The Plan: Reconstruction of Town East Boulevard from Military Parkway to Skyline Drive. The reconstructed roadway will be a four-lane divided thoroughfare with two lanes in each direction. In addition, there will be drainage, sanitary sewer and water improvements. The newly paved roadway will have a thick concrete pavement section to accommodate the large volume of heavy truck traffic.

What's happening now: Water lines have been installed and sewer work is complete. Inlet work is underway and drainage installation is nearly finished. The roadway concrete has been placed from Military Parkway to Union Pacific Railroad.

What's next: Paving of the southbound lanes (western lanes) will continue. The contractor is doing hand pours at intersections. The western lanes of pavement from Military Parkway to Skyline Drive are scheduled to be completed by October.

Estimated completion date: Spring 2019

Town East Blvd. Phase 2 (U.S. 80 to Skyline Drive) Reconstruction Project

The Plan: The existing six-lane section road will be reconstructed as a four-lane section from Skyline Drive to Forney Road and the section from Forney Road to US 80 reconstructed as a six-lane section. The newly paved roadway will have a thick concrete pavement section to accomodate the large volume of heavy truck traffic.

The four-lane section south of Forney Road will be shifted to the west side of the right-of-way to provide the maximum buffer distance between the industrial traffic and the residential neighborhood. This shift will also allow the design to include a 12-foot wide multi-use pedestrian trail and an eight-foot screening wall adjacent to residential properties.

What's happening now: The project is currently under design. Final design will be completed at the end of 2018 with construction beginning the first quarter of 2019.

Estimated completion date: Summer 2020

Bruton Road, Northwest Drive and Kearney Street Mill and Asphalt Overlay Project

The Plan: Rehabilitation of approximately 58,000 square yards of major thoroughfares with spot concrete repairs, removal of the old asphalt surface by milling and applying a new 1-1/2 inch hot-mix asphaltic overlay on the following three roadways: 1) Northwest Drive from I-30 to Oates Drive; 2) Bruton Road from I-635 to Rodeo Center; and 3) Gross Road/Kearney Street from Galloway Avenue to I-635. The plan includes reconstruction of curb ramps to enhance sidewalk accessibility.

What's happening now: Construction of the asphalt overlay on Northwest Drive, Bruton Road, Kearney Street and Gross Road is now complete.

What's next: City crews are doing a final walk through and creating a punch list of any repair needs before finalizing the contract.

Estimated completion date: Summer 2018

I-635 to U.S. 80 Service Road Extension and Ramp Reconfiguration

The Plan: This Texas Department of Transportation project will remove the US 80 N. Galloway Avenue exit ramp and construct a new northbound frontage road along I-635 from Gross Road to US 80 and from I-635 to N. Galloway Avenue. More than 1.6 miles of frontage road will be reconstructed with access to the I-635/US 80 interchange improved.

What's happening now: All frontage road pavement is complete. Paving of sidewalks and directional islands is being completed. While punch list items are being addressed, the Gross Road overpass median is being reconstructed. Permanent traffic signals are being installed.

What's next: Completion of landscaping and small areas of pavement.

Estimated completion date: Winter 2018

Real. Texas. Roads.

The Plan: The repair and rehabilitation of approximately 100 miles of residential streets, curbs and sidewalks where needed, over a ten-year period.

The repair method chosen for each street depends on the existing condition of the street. However, the usual order of repairs is: 1) pavement lifting; 2) localized concrete repair; 3) new surface reconstruction; and 4) miscellaneous repairs and cleanup. What's happening now: Miscellaneous repairs and cleanup is taking place on Bamboo. Localized concrete repairs are complete on Moon Drive, Rockne, Morgan Drive, Morgan Circle, Royal Crest, Upland, Pebble Creek, Redmill and Green Leaf. Localized concrete repairs are still in progress on Sidney, Statler, Shorewood, Evans, Cascade, Mark, Greenhill, Chapell and Embassy.

What's next: Crews are completing the second year (2017) list of streets and will continue localized concrete repair on the 2018 list of streets.

Estimated completion date: The original program includes the repair and rehabilitation of approximately 100 miles of residential streets over a ten-year period. However, the City Council has decided to accelerate the program to complete it within eight years. The program is expected to be completed fall 2024. Construction on the second-year list of streets is scheduled to be completed summer 2018. Construction on the third-year list of streets will begin late summer 2018.

Military Parkway Trail (I-635 to Sam Houston Rd.) - September 2018

Military Parkway Trail (I-635 to Sam Houston Road)

The Plan: This project includes the construction of a 12-foot wide shared-use path along the south side of Military Parkway from Sam Houston Road to Rodeo Center Boulevard. The project is 80 percent grant funded through the Transportation Alternative Program.

What's happening now: The contractor is working on the section between Masters Drive and Sam Houston Road, pouring driveways and the trail. Work on the section between Idlewyld Drive and Rollingwood Drive, which includes a retaining wall, continues.

What's next: The contractor will work to tie in the ramps and missing sidewalk connections between Peachtree Road and Masters Drive, progressing with the section of the trail towards Sam Houston Road. Minor work is needed to finish the section between Peachtree Road and I-635 to tie everything together.

Estimated completion date: Fall 2018

Scyene Road Paving and Utility Improvements

The Plan: Reconstruction of Scyene Road from Clay-Mathis Road to Lawson Road to support industrial development near the Mesquite Metro Airport. Water, sewer and drainage improvements will also be constructed to make industrial sites ready for development. The newly paved roadway will have a thick concrete pavement section to withstand heavy truck traffic.

What's happening now: Scyene paving is underway for the eastbound side from Clay Mathis Road to Airport Boulevard.

What's next: McMahon is anticipated to continue the eastbound lane of Scyene and complete phase one tie-ins to Airport, Ashley, Faithon P Lucas and Clay Mathis. Airport Road should have access to Scyene and to Clay Mathis by mid-September. Utility relocations for AT&T, Oncor and Spectrum are underway.

Estimated completion date: Fall 2018

I-635 (US 75/Central Expressway to
I-30)

The Plan: The Texas Department of Transportation is reconstructing I-635 from US 75 to I-30. The reconstruction will provide five main lanes and two managed lanes in both directions, continual frontage roads starting at Town East Boulevard and full reconstruction of the I-30/I-635 interchange. The project will improve safety and mobility, enhance system continuity, and accommodate projected growth throughout the region. Increasing capacity will relieve congestion and reduce travel time as well as provide social and economic benefits locally, regionally and statewide. The Texas Transportation Commission approved design and construction of the full LBJ East project on July 26, 2018.

Phase 1 (sound wall construction) is underway, this includes the construction of six sound wall segments along I-635. Four of the new sound segments are in the City of Mesquite.

What's happening now: The existing sound walls along I-635 in Mesquite have been removed. The sound walls on the west side of I-635 are being prepared to have the foundation installed. The full project has gone to bid for the design-build contract.

What's next: A design-build contractor for the full project will be selected.
