Mesquite presents city update and annual employee awards

On February 8, Mayor Stan Pickett presented the 2018 City Update at the annual Mesquite Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner. The evening included City employee awards for Police Officer Paul Wathen, Firefighter Samantha Criswell and Public Works Maintenance Crew Chief Keith Chilton. The Chamber of Commerce also named Ashley Furniture Industries as Groundbreaker of the Year. Ashley Furniture’s $65 million South Central Distribution and Fulfillment Center, to be located at 4000 E. Scyene Road, will bring more than 350 new jobs to Mesquite. Watch the award presentation.

City Council to meet on February 19

On Monday, February 19, the Mesquite City Council Pre-Meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B at Mesquite City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Ave. The City Council Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. The meeting will also be broadcast via Facebook Live. Councilmembers and City staff will not be able to answer questions during the broadcast. City staff will address questions after the meeting. The Beach Boys to headline Lone Star Legacy Gala on February 24

The Beach Boys will headline the Mesquite ISD Education Foundation’s 12th Annual Lone Star Legacy Gala on Saturday, February 24. The event will take place at Mesquite Arena, located at 1818 Rodeo Drive, and doors will open at 6 p.m. Proceeds support innovative educational programs for Mesquite ISD teachers and students. Citizen input meeting scheduled for February 27

The City of Mesquite will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, February 27, to discuss preliminary plans for the reconstruction of Town East Boulevard Phase 2 (U.S. 80 to Skyline Drive) and the future road project of Skyline Drive (Town East Boulevard to Peachtree Road). Project exhibits will be available for public viewing at 6:30 p.m. and the public meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at Rugel Elementary School cafeteria, 2701 Sybil Drive. After the presentations, the City will provide a survey to each attendee at the meeting as well as online public access to the survey. Volunteers honored at annual luncheon

On February 15, the City hosted its 2018 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to recognize volunteers that gave their time to help our community. In 2017, volunteers donated nearly 77,000 hours of service for different programs and departments. Volunteers are instrumental in the delivery of many City services and the City of Mesquite is always seeking those who wish to help. Mesquite introduces Eric Pratt as new Mesquite Metro Airport General Manager

The City of Mesquite announced Eric Pratt as the new General Manager of the Mesquite Metro Airport. Pratt was the Airport Operations Manager at McKinney National Airport since 2013. Pratt replaces Cynthia Godfrey who is retiring. Godfrey has been the Airport Director since 1997. In addition to McKinney National Airport, Pratt has worked at Dallas Love Field and Collin County Regional Airport in various operational roles. He was also a pilot from 2011-2013 for Monarch Air based in Addison, TX.

Monthly sales tax report

The State Comptroller’s Office reported a 5.0 percent decrease in the City’s sales tax collections for the month of February compared to the same period last year. February’s report is based on sales reported by local businesses during the month of December. Year-to-date collections are flat with an overall increase of less than one percent.
