Hurricane Harvey has produced record rainfall and massive flooding in Houston and many Texas towns including Orange, Port Arthur and Beaumont. The storm has also resulted in at least 39 known deaths. Mesquite Police Department graduates three recruits from
its academy

The Mesquite Police Department (MPD) graduated three recruits from its Basic Police Officer Course (BPOC) this week. Less than four percent of the 2,664 law enforcement agencies in Texas have a training academy. MPD has graduated 45 recruits from its BPOC since the training academy began in 2013. The graduates are Cody A. Garcia – Forney, TX; Christopher L. Wylie – Mesquite, TX and Joshua S. Holmes – Mesquite, TX. The three new police officers completed 25 weeks of the BPOC program. They will now begin a 17-week field training program. Upon successful completion of the field training program the police officers will be assigned to patrol duties.

City of Mesquite and STAR Transit closed on September 4

All City of Mesquite offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, September 4, in observance of the Labor Day holiday with the exception of the Mesquite Metro Airport. Trash and recycling will not be collected. Collection will occur on residents' next scheduled collection day. For more details on City holiday closures, visit www.cityofmesquite.com/Holidays.

Mesquite City Council to meet on Tuesday, September 5

On Tuesday, September 5, the Mesquite City Council Pre-Meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B at Mesquite City Hall, located at 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The City Council Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. August 29 Town Hall Tuesday video and presentation available online

The City of Mesquite hosted a Town Hall Tuesday on August 29. The program provided information on how to connect with the City, report service issues and become involved through volunteer activities. The next Town Hall Tuesday is scheduled for October 24 on the topic of public safety.

Mesquite Charter Review Committee to host public meeting September 6

The Mesquite Charter Review Committee will host a public meeting to gather public input on a review of the City Charter. The committee will meet in the City Council Conference Room at Mesquite City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, to receive a briefing from City staff. The committee will then meet in City Council Chambers at 7 p.m. to receive public input. Both meetings are open to the public. The Mesquite City Council created an advisory committee to review, receive public input and provide a report to the City Council on possible changes to the City of Mesquite Charter. 2017 Second Quarter Development Activity Report available online

The Economic Development Activity Report for the second quarter of 2017 is now available online at www.cityofmesquite.com/DevelopmentHighlights. The report summarizes development activity from April through June 2017 and includes: projects in discussion and review, building permits issued, certificates of occupancy issued, business retention and economic updates.

Mesquite Residential Recycling Program

The City of Mesquite encourages all residents to recycle as part of its commitment to environmental stewardship and waste reduction. Green 18-gallon recycling bins are available to Mesquite residents on a request basis to provide citizens in Mesquite an opportunity to recycle.
