Gus Thomasson Road (Karla Drive to Moon Drive) Reconstruction Project

The Plan: It includes the reconstruction of Gus Thomasson Road from Karla Drive to Moon Drive. The reconstructed roadway will be a four-lane divided thoroughfare with the addition of bicycle lanes, a wider sidewalk and other pedestrian improvements. In addition, there will be drainage, water and sanitary sewer improvements made.

What's happening now: On June 19, the City Council authorized a redesign of the project to remove the roundabouts at Karla Drive and Moon Drive/Whitson Way. During the next few weeks, crews will continue installing a new water main through the intersection of Oates Drive and Gus Thomasson Road. Traffic on Oates Drive at Gus Thomasson Road has been reduced to one lane in each direction. All traffic on Gus Thomasson Road from Karla Drive to Oates Drive has been rerouted to the northbound lanes. Temporary median openings and driveways have been installed to allow access to affected businesses.

What's next: Utility and drainage installation will continue. Preparation of the southbound roadway will begin soon with the pavement process scheduled to start in July.

Estimated completion date: To be determined. City staff is working with the contractor and consultants to determine cost and schedule changes due to the redesign.

I-635 to U.S. 80 Service Road Extension and Ramp Reconfiguration

The Plan: This Texas Department of Transportation project will modify the U.S. Highway 80 (U.S. 80) North Galloway Avenue exit ramp and construct a new northbound frontage road along Interstate 635 (I-635) from Gross Road to U.S. 80. It will reconstruct more than 1.6 miles of frontage road and improve access to the I-635/U.S. 80 interchange.

What's happening now: During the next few weeks, the contractor will continue grading and paving the frontage road along I-635, grading on the U.S. 80 frontage road, removing and reconstructing the sidewalk on the west side of the Galloway Avenue bridge, and installing temporary traffic signals at the intersection of U.S. 80 and Galloway Avenue. This work will require periodic, temporary lane closures in the area.

Motley Drive (Gus Thomasson Blvd. to Town East Blvd.) Reconstruction Project

The Plan: It includes the reconstruction of Motley Drive from Gus Thomasson Boulevard to Town East Boulevard. The reconstructed roadway will be a four-lane divided roadway on the north and south ends, and a two-lane divided roadway with some on-street parking through the residential area. In addition, there will be drainage, sanitary sewer and water improvements.

What's happening now: During the next few weeks, crews will continue to install new storm sewer and water lines. Atmos Energy has completed lowering the gas main across Motley Drive. All traffic on Motley Drive between Town East and Gus Thomasson Road has been rerouted to the northbound lanes. This traffic control design will be in place for several months until the southbound lanes are completely reconstructed.

What's next: The contractor will begin work on the pavement improvements of the southbound lanes, beginning at Town East Boulevard and progressing towards Gus Thomasson Road. Watch the May 16 Mesquite Minute video to find out more and view onsite construction.

Town East Boulevard (Military Parkway to Skyline Drive) Reconstruction Projects

The Plan: It includes the reconstruction of Town East Boulevard from Military Parkway to Skyline Drive. The reconstructed roadway will be a four-lane divided thoroughfare with two lanes in each direction. In addition, there will be drainage, sanitary sewer and water improvements.

What's happening now: Temporary traffic signals and lane striping have been installed to reroute all traffic to the southbound lanes. Temporary median openings and driveways have been installed to allow access to affected businesses. During the next few weeks, crews will continue to remove concrete along the northbound side of Town East Boulevard to prepare for the installation of a new water main. Materials are being delivered daily.

What's next: The utility contractor will begin installing the new water main.

Estimated completion date: Fall 2018

Real. Texas. Roads.

The Plan: It includes the repair of more than 100 miles of residential streets, as well as curbs and sidewalks where needed, over a ten-year period.

What's happening now: Repairs to the first set of residential streets continue with 24 streets completed. The following streets are nearing completion with localized concrete repairs remaining: Crest Park Drive and Crestridge Drive.

What's next: Construction has started on the second list of streets. The repair method chosen for each street depends on the existing condition of the street. However, the usual order of repairs is: 1) pavement lifting, 2) localized concrete repair, 3) new surface reconstruction, 4) miscellaneous repairs and cleanup. Estimated completion date: The Real. Texas. Roads. program includes the repair of more than 100 miles of residential streets over a ten-year period. The program is expected to be completed Fall 2026. Current construction on the second list of streets is scheduled to be completed Spring 2018.
