Canvassing of election results and public reception to be held on May 17

The City of Mesquite annual Municipal Election was held on May 6 to elect a Mayor and Councilmembers for Places 1, 2 and 6. To view the results, visit A special City Council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on May 17 to canvass the election results. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue.

A public reception will follow in honor of re-elected Mayor Stan Pickett and Councilmember Jeff Casper and newly elected Councilmembers Robert Miklos and Tandy Boroughs. The reception will be held in the lobby at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue.

A Neighborhood Night at the Ball Park to be held on May 18

In celebration of recent renovations, the public is invited to enjoy A Neighborhood Night at the Ball Park on Thursday, May 18, from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at Vanston Park, 2913 Oates Drive. Enjoy a free cook-out while supplies last, Texas-sized yard games and music. New features to the park include two lighted baseball game fields, a new picnic shelter, lighted basketball court, walking trail and improved parking for visitors to the park as well as Vanston Pool.

Movies in the Park to be held May 19

Mesquite Parks and Recreation invites the public to attend Movies in the Park at its new location at Paschall Park, 1001 New Market Road. The movie "Trolls" will be shown at this free family-friendly event on Friday, May 19. Pre-show entertainment begins at 7 p.m. and includes music and games. The movie will begin at dusk. Patrons are encouraged to bring their picnic baskets, lawn chairs and blankets. Movies in the Park is also a donation location for the Spread the Love campaign. Visit for more information.

Mesquite plans for the future of the IH-20 corridor

Recently, the City of Mesquite held a visioning exercise to gather input from the community to develop a long-term strategic plan for the Interstate Highway 20 (IH-20) corridor that leads into Mesquite. The exercise included area property owners, residents and others chosen to represent a broad perspective of the community. The development of the IH-20 corridor is one of the top policy issues for the City Council. It is a high priority to develop a comprehensive plan for the IH-20 area by identifying land use and infrastructure needs to plan for the future growth of this last undeveloped gateway into Mesquite.

Mesquite Golf Club offers Spread the Love donation special

The Mesquite Golf Club, 825 W. Interstate 30, is offering a Spread the Love special. Donate to the campaign by bringing a jar of peanut butter or jelly to the golf course and receive one small bucket of driving range balls. The Spread the Love peanut butter and jelly food drive benefits the food pantries of Sharing Life Community Outreach and Mesquite Social Services. Mesquite ISD offers free Summer Food Service Program

The Mesquite Independent School District (MISD) has announced its free Summer Food Service Program. The program offers free nutritious meals this summer for all children age 1 - 18. The 2017 Summer Food Service Program offers free breakfast and free lunch to any child. Adults may purchase a breakfast for $1.50 and lunch for $3 at most participating locations. No advance qualifying or registration is required. For details, visit

Charitable solicitor regulations

Citizens are encouraged to be cautious if they choose to donate money to individuals on street intersections soliciting for funds for a certain cause. The City of Mesquite issues a permit to any organization that meets all of the required conditions and Mesquite Police officers monitor the activities of the organization to ensure compliance with the permit conditions. Anyone who has a permit must wear it on their outer clothing and each person involved must have a permit.  They must stand on the median or other public right-of-way other than the roadway. Soliciting from the roadway is prohibited. Each solicitor must also be at least 18 years old. If you witness any questionable activity, please call the Mesquite Police Department non-emergency phone number at 972-216-6759.

Mesquite Rehabilitation Institute ranks in top 10 percent of
inpatient rehabilitation

Mesquite Rehabilitation Institute has been ranked in the top 10 percent of inpatient rehabilitation facilities nationally for the sixth consecutive year. The hospital was ranked from among 781 inpatient rehabilitation facilities nationwide by the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation, a nonprofit group developed with support from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, a component of the U.S Department of Education.
