City Council adopts
annual operating budget

On September 19, the Mesquite City Council adopted the City’s annual operating budget for the next fiscal year. City Council awards contract for Motley Drive reconstruction

The Mesquite City Council awarded the Motley Drive reconstruction contract at the September 19 City Council meeting. The project will be a complete reconstruction of Motley Drive between Gus Thomasson Road and Town East Boulevard. The project also includes replacing aging water, sewer and drainage infrastructure throughout the corridor. Construction is expected to begin in November.

Sounds in the Square to feature Backhand Sally on September 24

Backhand Sally will perform on Saturday, September 24 during Sounds in the Square held in Heritage Square, 120 W. Main Street, from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Sounds in the Square is a new concert series offered during the months of September, October and November in Mesquite's Heritage Square. HMI to host Homemade Ice Cream
Churn-Off contest

Join Historic Mesquite, Inc. (HMI) on Saturday, October 15, for the first Treasures Homemade Ice Cream Churn-Off. The contest will be held in conjunction with the HMI Treasures Barn Sale to be held October 14 and 15 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Both events will be held at Opal Lawrence Historical Park, 711 E. Kearney Street. The use of a hand-cranked ice cream freezer is preferred. Awards will be given for: Most Unique Flavor, Best in Show and the People's Choice. Summer camp Mesquite Minute
hosts recognized

During the summer, participants from the Mesquite Parks and Recreation Department’s summer camps served as guest hosts of the City’s weekly video news program called the Mesquite Minute. A total of six different camps were featured with 29 youth acting as hosts of the video news program. All participates were invited to attend the September 19 City Council meeting to be recognized. Those in attendance were presented with certificates of appreciation by Mayor Stan Pickett, and were individually thanked by the City Council.

Chamber of Commerce Taste & Trade to be held September 27

The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce 21^st annual Taste & Trade will be held on Tuesday, September 27 from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Mesquite Convention Center and Exhibit Hall, 1750 Rodeo Drive. Enjoy displays, exhibits and food samples from area restaurants. This year’s theme is “Deep in the Heart of Texas.” Presale tickets are $8, and available at the Chamber of Commerce office, 617 N. City of Mesquite recognizes Constitution Week

September 17, 2016 marked the 229^th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America. In recognition, Mayor Stan Pickett proclaimed the week of September 17 - 23 as Constitution Week in Mesquite, and encouraged citizens to study the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution. Constitution Week was signed into law in 1956 after the petitioning of Congress by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organization. The proclamation was presented to DAR representatives by Mayor Pickett on September 20.
