City offices and STAR Transit closed on September 5

City of Mesquite offices and facilities will be closed on September 5, in observance of Labor Day. However, the Mesquite Metro Airport will be open. The closures include:

All recreation centers;
The Compost Facility and Citizens Convenience Center;
Both libraries;
Mesquite Animal Shelter;
Mesquite Arts Center;
Florence Ranch Homestead and Opal Lawrence Park;
Mesquite Convention and Visitors Bureau;
No trash or recycling collected. Collection will occur on residents' next scheduled collection day.

STAR Transit offices will also be closed on September 5 and will reopen September 6 at 8 a.m. This includes the DART Express Bus Route 282 (COMPASS), Balch Springs Midtown Express and the Kaufman Trolley. Visit www.STARtransit.org for more information.

September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month which serves as a reminder to prepare for emergencies now, before they occur. Throughout September, the Office of Emergency Management will have preparedness displays with free literature and children’s activity books at two locations: the Mesquite Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive and the Municipal Center, 1515 N. Galloway Avenue. Weekly drawings for prizes will also be offered at both locations. Citizens may register for the drawings at the display locations. City announces new mobile app

The City recently announced its new mobile app for smart devices. The name of the free app is MesquiteTX. Citizens can now receive information and connect with the City across all mobile devices. Citizens can register for e-news/text alerts, report service issues, link to City Council content and receive a variety of other City information. Perot Museum TECH Truck to visit Mesquite Main Library

The Perot Museum TECH Truck is bringing discovery directly to the Mesquite Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive, from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. on September 14. The TECH Truck engages youth in hands-on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) experiences that promote creativity and confidence in children. The event is free and open to children in kindergarten through sixth grade. For more information, call the Main Library at 972-216-6220.

Reading Buddies program

The Mesquite Main Library offers the Reading Buddies program every Tuesday from 4:30 – 5 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive. The program partners children, preschool through second grade, with a teenage or adult volunteer to spend 30 minutes reading, playing games or other activities intended to improve reading ability. Those interested in participating as a Reading Buddy should contact the Main Library at 972-216-6220.

Dallas Regional Medical Center recognizes first responders at luncheon

The Dallas Regional Medical Center recently recognized City Public Safety personnel at its quarterly luncheon. The firefighters honored were, Bryan Serda, Isaac Joseph, Elliot Howard, Kevin Stone, Micah Marienfeld, Jeremy Heiner, David David and Brett Phillips.

Fire Department announces rank promotions

Fire Chief Mark Kerby and the Fire Department are proud to announce three recent promotions in rank. Lieutenant Travis Greenman was promoted to the rank of Captain. He is now assigned to the Fire Prevention Division, where he will oversee the department’s Public Education program and serve as the public information officer for the department. Driver-Engineer Israel Guy was promoted to Lieutenant. He is assigned to the Operations division, where he will supervise an engine company. Firefighter Royce Cartwright was promoted to the rank of Driver-Engineer. He is assigned to the Operations division as part of an engine company.
