Freedom Park dedication ceremony to be held on September 11

The community is invited to help dedicate Freedom Park on September 11 at 3 p.m. The dedication will be held at the park, which is adjacent to the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway Avenue. Freedom Park will be a place to celebrate the freedoms of art, music, education and assembly. The park will also offer visitors the opportunity to touch a piece of steel beam pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center. Genelle Guzman-McMillan, the last survivor to be pulled from the rubble of the fallen towers, will also be in attendance to share her experience. Back to school safety tips for drivers

On August 22, the Mesquite Independent School District will be back in session. The City reminds drivers to be extra cautious as school zones become active again and to be aware of school bus safety.

"Spread the Love" campaign collects over 2,400 jars of peanut butter and jelly

During the August 15 City Council meeting, representatives of Sharing Life Community Outreach and Mesquite Social Services thanked the City Council and Mesquite community for the overwhelming support of the “Spread the Love” peanut butter and jelly food drive. More than 2,400 jars of peanut butter and jelly, enough to make 20,000 sandwiches, were donated during the City’s food drive which benefited both local food pantries. Mesquite AMBUCS also recently donated $600 to the campaign.

Relics in Time antique store opens on the downtown square

Relics in Time antique store is now open on the downtown square at 215 W. Main Street. The shop’s slogan is, “Where Antiques meet Modern Age.” Merchandise includes collectible antiques, new home décor, clothing and more.

Doggie Splash Day

The 13th annual Doggie Splash Day was held on August 13 at Vanston Pool. The event included a doggie swim suit contest, a diving contest and a dog paddle race. More than 210 dogs and their owners attended this year’s event.

Mesquite Public Library assists with Mesquite Back to School Fairs

Staff from the Mesquite Public Libraries participated in the Back to School Fairs held on August 13 at Mesquite and Poteet High Schools. Staff handed out information regarding library services, programs and answered questions. A Wi-Fi hotspot at Mesquite High School allowed attendees to apply for library cards on-site using a mobile app.
