City Council to meet on May 6

The Mesquite City Council meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6, at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Ave. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person.

Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister by either sending an email to sland@cityofmesquite.com  or calling 972-329-8388 before 3 p.m. on May 6. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on May 6 to the City Secretary.

Join the fiesta with Cinco celebration

Celebrate the Cinco de Mayo with the City of Mesquite. The free, family-friendly annual event will be from 12-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, in Downtown Mesquite at Front Street Station, 100 West Front St.

Festivities will include authentic Mexican food and artisanal vendors, Folklórico dancers and live music including local singers, a kids activity area with free arts and crafts and piñata breaks and a jalapeño-eating contest.

The Cinco de Mayo celebration, a partnership between the City of Mesquite and the Hispanic Forum of Mesquite, is sponsored by America’s Credit Union, Dallas Regional Medical Center and Whataburger of Mesquite.

District picnic notices

District 4 picnic to be held on May 18

City Councilmember Tandy Boroughs will host the District 4 Picnic at 12 p.m. on May 18 at Evans Recreation Center, 1116 Hillcrest St.

Residents in District 4 are invited to meet their Councilmember and their neighbors while enjoying some food.

Spring weather changes rapidly, so please be sure to check the City's social media accounts to find out if the picnic has to be moved indoors or rescheduled.

Utility Billing changes

In-person hours, cash payment changes in Utility Billing

Effective May 6, 2024, in-person hours for the Utility Billing office will change to 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Also, change for cash payments will be made in whole dollar amounts only. Additional change due less than $1 will be applied as a credit to your next bill. Cash customers can still pay with exact change.

May the Fourth Be With You

May the 4th Be With You event

Channel your inner Jedi and enjoy an afternoon of Star Wars-themed crafts, games, trivia, and more at the May the 4th Be With You party.

This free event at 2 p.m. on May 4 will be located in a galaxy not so far away at the Mesquite Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Dr. For information, call 972-216-6220.

Mom's Day Butterfly Trail Tour & Picnic

Make plans to celebrate the moms in your life with Keep Mesquite Beautiful's Mother’s Day Butterfly Trail Tour and Picnic on May 11.

Bring your decorated “Mother Nature” inspired wagon, grab a blanket, and enjoy a light brunch or bring your own picnic.

Highlights at this free event include guided trail tours, seed ball making, wagon parade, family games, chalk art, photo opportunities, and more.

Walking for Wellness

Get Fit: Walking for Wellness on May 18

Let's take steps to physically Get Fit Mesquite! Join us for Walking for Wellness from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 18 at the Fraiser Middle School track, 2250 Scyene Road.

This free, fun and interactive event will include prizes for walkers who go the furthest distance. Health-focused vendors also will be onsite for educational purposes.

Get Fit Mesquite is a self-improvement program that encourages residents to practice health and wellness physically, mentally and financially. Learn more at www.cityofmesquite.com/GetFitMesquite. Programming is ongoing and will continue all year long, so visit often.

Arts events abound in May 

Every Saturday night through June, join us for the Off the Rails concert series. Bring your chair and coolers to enjoy a variety of music styles from Celtic to Rockabilly. Showtime is at 7 p.m. at Front Street Station, 100 W. Front St. Off the Rails are free, family-friendly events presented by the Mesquite Arts Council, Downtown Mesquite and the City of Mesquite.

Get your groove on with the next installment of the free Mesquite Rocks! concert series at 7 p.m. on May 16. Graceland Ninjaz will deliver a high-energy show blending mashups and greatest hits spanning five decades of rock-n-roll, dance, hip hop and soul.

The Mesquite Symphony Orchestra will present Into the Fire at 7:30 p.m. on May 18 in the Concert Hall. Under the direction of Conductor Felix Torres, the performance will include Agudelo’s Algo va a suceder..., Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring pianist Daria Kiseleva, and Stravinsky's Suite from The Firebird.
