Development Activity Second Quarter Report available online

The Development Activity Second Quarter 2016 Report is now available online at www.cityofmesquite.com/DevelopmentActivity. The report summarizes development activity from April through June 2016, which includes: projects in discussion and review, building permits issued, certificates of occupancy issued, business retention and economic updates.

Police Department announces
"Back the Blue, Bring a Book"

The Police Department has announced their continued support of local reading initiatives for youth by asking the community to donate new or used children’s books through the “Back the Blue, Bring a Book” campaign. The one-day campaign will be held on August 9 and will benefit the Mesquite ISD’s Back to School Fair on August 13. Donations may be dropped off in specially marked collection bins at the Main Library, 300 West Grubb Drive from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. and at the North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Drive, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Debusk Park wooden trail/bridge removed

The City extends a tremendous thank you to the Boy Scouts from the Order of the Arrow Uktena Chapter and Eastern Skies District. The group recently dismantled and removed the elevated wooden trail at Debusk Park as a service project to the community. The work was performed by 59 volunteers and required a combined total of 241 service hours. The wooden trail was no longer needed due to the previous re-routing of the concrete trail along South Parkway by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Clear the Shelters Day succeeds with 92 adoptions

The 2016 Clear the Shelters Day, held on July 23, was a great success with 92 dogs and cats adopted. Clear the Shelters Day is a national event with participating shelters waiving adoption fees to raise awareness and place all adoptable pets into new homes. All adopted pets were sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped and came with over $200 worth of free veterinary services in vouchers donated by VIP Petcare.

Addressing Mesquite Day deadlines extended

The City has extended the deadline for both job request applications and volunteers for Addressing Mesquite Day. This year's day of service will be held on October 8. Work will include tree trimming, painting, constructing handicap-accessible ramps, debris removal and landscaping. Go to www.cityofmesquite.com/AMD to volunteer or to request assistance. The deadline to apply for assistance is August 5 and the deadline to volunteer to help is August 26.

Mesquite Police Department accepting
2016 Citizens Police Academy applications

Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Mesquite Police Department Citizens Police Academy. The academy is a twelve-week program which provides residents the opportunity to learn about the Mesquite Police Department directly from the men and women of the department. The program is held once a year and begins on September 15.

The academy includes both classroom education and hands-on learning experience. Classes are held from 7 – 10 p.m. each Thursday. Topics include crime scene investigation, traffic enforcement, building searches, community services and more.
