Gus Thomasson Road Reconstruction Project
public meeting

The City will host a public meeting on Thursday, June 30 regarding preliminary plans for the reconstruction of Gus Thomasson Road, from U.S. 80 to Town East Boulevard. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at the McDonald Middle School cafeteria, 2930 N. Town East Boulevard. The meeting will include a presentation of project information by staff, exhibits of the proposed plans and an opportunity for attendees to participate in a question/answer session and voice their opinions. Touch a Truck at Movies in the Park

The Movies in the Park “Touch a Truck” event was held on Friday, June 17 at City Lake Park.  Touch a Truck is a unique, interactive event which allows children to see, touch and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles. Approximately 250 guests stayed after the event to enjoy the movie, Underdog. The next Movies in the Park event will be held on July 15 and will feature Elf in honor of Christmas in July. Activities begin at 7 p.m. and the movie will begin at dusk.

City Council continues support of
Spread the Love Campaign

Councilmember Greg Noschese donated 52 jars of peanut butter towards the City’s Spread the Love campaign at the June 20 Council meeting and challenged others to do likewise. He donated one jar of peanut butter for each week of the year. The Spread the Love campaign generates donations of peanut butter and jelly for local food pantries to help families in need during the summer. For details on supporting the campaign, visit   

2015-2016 budget receives national recognition

The City received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for the 2015-2016 Annual Operating Budget.  This is the 28th time the City has been recognized with this national award. The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the highest award available in governmental budgeting. The nationally recognized 2015-2016 Annual Operating Budget is located on the City’s website at  


City hires new Senior Emergency
Management Specialist

Kevin Dodge was recently hired as the new Senior Emergency Management Specialist for the City’s Emergency Management Division. Kevin filled the position vacated by Cindy Carlo after she was promoted to Emergency Management Coordinator. Kevin holds a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Administration and Planning and has more than 11 years of first responder and emergency management experience.

Mosquito traps

Each week, 18 mosquito traps are set throughout the city. These traps are used to evaluate mosquito activity levels and to test for the presence of viruses. This week, four of the traps tested positive for West Nile Virus. The four areas were sprayed on June 23 and a repeat treatment will be completed this weekend. Residents are reminded to wear mosquito repellant when outside during the early morning and evening hours.  For additional information, go to the City’s website at

Mesquite Championship Rodeo kicks off summer season July 2

The Mesquite Championship Rodeo will begin its summer season on Saturday, July 2. Rodeo events will be held every Saturday night, July 2 through October 1. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices start at $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 3 - 12 years old. Children three and under are free. Tickets are available for purchase through Ticketmaster, online at or by calling the Mesquite Arena box office at 972-285-8777. Discount tickets are available at DFW-area O’Reilly Auto Parts stores and Boot Barn.
