Movies in the Park

 On Friday, May 20, the Parks and Recreation Department hosted a record crowd at Movies in the Park featuring “The Good Dinosaur.” More than 950 people were in attendance at City Lake Park to enjoy games, dancing and the movie.  The next Movie in the Park is scheduled for Friday, June 17 featuring the movie “Underdog” along with the City’s annual Touch-a-Truck event. 

KidFish

A successful KidFish was held on Saturday, May 14 at City Lake Park. More than 300 children participated in the fishing tournament, earning trophies and prizes for various categories including the largest fish.  Three-year-old Brady Williams won the largest fish award by catching a catfish that was 30.5 inches long. This event is held in partnership with the Community Heart of Mesquite.

City offers Safe Exchange Zone

The City created a Safe Exchange Zone for citizens to conduct face-to-face sales transactions to help prevent criminal activity. This Safe Exchange Zone includes two marked parking spaces and is located in the front parking lot of the Mesquite Police Station, 777 N. Galloway Ave. The area is monitored 24-hours a day by surveillance cameras.

City to sell 25 properties

The City published a list of 25 properties available for sale in the Daily Commercial Record. The City acquired these properties through the tax foreclosure process and is selling them on behalf of MISD and Dallas County. Anyone interested in purchasing the properties must go through the bid process. Additional information about the properties and bidding process will be available on the City’s website on Tuesday at www.cityofmesquite.com/346/Purchasing. 

Memorial Day closures

City offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day. The facilities and closures are:

The Compost Facility and Convenience Center are closed.
No trash or recycling collected.
Both libraries closed.
Mesquite Animal Shelter is closed.
Mesquite Metro Airport is closed.
Mesquite Arts Center is closed.
Mesquite Convention and Visitors Bureau is closed.

STAR Transit will also be closed Monday, May 30. There will be no demand responsive transit service or  DART Express Bus Route 282 (COMPASS) service next Monday. Both services will resume operation on Tuesday at their normal times. 2015-2016 Leadership Mesquite Class graduates

The 2015-2016 Leadership Mesquite Class graduated at the Chamber of Commerce Membership Luncheon on May 26. This year’s class was the largest to date with 23 graduates, including 11 City of Mesquite employees. City Manager Cliff Keheley, a 1995-1996 graduate of Leadership Mesquite, was the guest speaker. Keheley spoke on the importance of the program and also discussed many of the City Council’s current goals and priorities.

Leadership Mesquite is a nine-month program offered by the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce to educate and promote leadership skills in emerging business and civic leaders in the Mesquite community. Ducks at City Lake Park

Recently, citizens expressed concern about the treatment of the duck population at City Lake Park. City staff has been in contact with Texas Parks and Wildlife who verified that all ducks are protected by the Migratory Bird Act which prohibits City staff from handling or relocating ducks for any reason.  If acts of animal cruelty against the ducks are witnessed, citizens should immediately call the Police Department non-emergency phone number at 972-285-6336.    

Mesquite libraries offer summer activities

The Mesquite Public Library invites everyone to “Get in the Game” this summer with its annual summer reading clubs for all ages. Children, teens and adults can visit the library from June 6 – July 30 to turn in reading logs and win a variety of prizes. Activities and special guest performances will also be offered throughout the summer months at both library locations.

Vanston Pool and City Lake Aquatic Center open Memorial Day weekend

Vanston Pool, 2913 Oates Dr., and City Lake Aquatic Center, 200 Parkview St., will be open May 28 - 30 from noon – 7 p.m. for Memorial Day weekend. Regular summer hours will begin June 4.  For more information go to www.cityofmesquite.com/PoolHours. Town East Pool, 2525 John Glenn Pkwy., will not open until June 4.

Discounted admissions to Vanston Pool and City Lake Aquatic Center will be available throughout the summer with the donation of one jar of peanut butter or jelly as part of the “Spread the Love” peanut butter and jelly food drive. Each pool attendee that brings either one jar of peanut butter or one jar of jelly will receive a $2 discount off their paid admission fee from 12 - 5 p.m., limited to one discount, per person, per day.
