City Council meets Oct. 18


Mesquite City Council will meet on Oct. 18 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B followed by a Work Session at 6:30 p.m. and the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. The public attending the meeting will have the option of wearing a face covering but the city will continue to implement social distancing measures with limited seating. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister as follows: Send an email or call the City Secretary on or before 3 p.m. on Oct. 18 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216- 6244. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on Oct. 18 to the following email address: sland@cityofmesquite.com. View meeting agendas online. Early voting starts Oct. 18


Registered Mesquite voters will have the opportunity to vote in the City’s General Election to elect the positions of Mayor and Councilmembers representing Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Only district residents will be permitted to vote for the candidates seeking to represent that district. The Mayor will be elected by all voters, because the office represents the entire City. Mesquite voters will also vote on Proposition A, which is for more public safety, more street repair and more cybersecurity. Early Voting starts on Oct. 18 and goes until Oct. 29. City holds Tax Election Public Meeting on Oct. 26


The City will hold the last public meeting about the upcoming tax election on Nov. 2. The next public meeting on the tax election will be at Mesquite City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue at 7 p.m. Proposition A is on the ballot for more public safety, more street repair and more cybersecurity. The Mesquite City Council unanimously approved the fiscal year 2021 – 2022 budget which keeps the City property tax rate the same as last year. State law requires that Mesquite voters approve this year’s tax rate which exceeds the 3.5% voter-approval tax rate. Learn more.

Fall Book Sale at the Library


The Mesquite Public Library's annual Book Sale is on Friday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will be at the Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive. For more information, please call 972-216-6220.

Join the Mesquite Arts Council at the annual celebration of Día de Los Muertos on Oct. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. The cultural event remembers loved ones that have passed away and reminds the departed that we are still thinking of them. Meter conversion project starts


The City of Mesquite has started a meter conversion project for all its residential and commercial water utility customers. The company Ameresco and their subcontractor Pedal Valve (PVI) were chosen to replace outdated manual meters with upgraded meters as part of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project which will upgrade and modernize the City’s water billing infrastructure. With this AMI water meter project, customers will have access to more frequent detailed information about water consumption, enabling them to have better control over their water usage and monthly bills. City announces sales tax activity for August 2021


The City of Mesquite’s October sales tax receipts, which represent sales activity for the month of August, is 15% above the amount reported for the same period last year when the pandemic restrictions were in place. The increase in sales tax activity this period is driven by home furnishings, retail sales and food and beverage services. Sales tax contributes 25% of the total revenue used to support the City’s General Fund, which supports services such as police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries and public works.
