City Council meets Sept. 20


Mesquite City Council will meet on Sept. 20 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B followed by a Work Session at 6:30 p.m. and the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. The public attending the meeting will have the option of wearing a face covering but the city will continue to implement social distancing measures with limited seating. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister as follows: Send an email or call the City Secretary on or before 3 p.m. on Sept. 20 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216- 6244. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on Sept. 20 to the following email address: sland@cityofmesquite.com. View meeting agendas online. Mesquite moves forward with Clean City Initiative


On the eve of the Sept. 18 National Cleanup Day, the City of Mesquite announces it has moved forward this week with its Clean City Initiative by adding more programs and opportunities for the community to get involved to help address litter in public areas and community appearance. Learn more at www.cityofmesquite.com/CleanCity. Keep Mesquite Beautiful holds Trash Bash on Sept. 25


Keep Mesquite Beautiful (KMB) will hold its volunteer cleanup event, Trash Bash, on Sept. 25. Trash Bash is an opportunity for families, neighbors and groups to get outside and help beautify the Mesquite community. Volunteer groups will be limited to 10 people per group and volunteers will be provided trash grabbers, safety vests, disposable gloves and trash bags during a curbside pick-up from 8 - 9 a.m. Register as a group or online at www.cityofmesquite.com/TrashBash.

Mesquite hosts 9/11 Memorial


The City of Mesquite held a sunrise memorial on Saturday, Sept. 11 to commemorate “Patriot Day” which is the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. This year’s program recognized the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Watch the memorial.

As a part of its continuing Recovery Mesquite efforts to help the community move forward and onward from the impacts of the pandemic, the City of Mesquite held its September Community Health Virtual Meeting on Sept. 14, focusing on a variety of mental health issues in association with National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Mesquite employee elected to be Chair of the Resource Conservation Council


The City of Mesquite’s Sustainability Program Coordinator, Kathy Fonville, has been elected to be the chair of the Resource Conservation Council (RCC). The RCC’s primary responsibility is to provide support and advice to the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Executive Board on methods to conserve, recover and recycle valuable resources and to provide proper handling and disposal of non-recoverable waste materials. Meter conversion project starts in October


The City of Mesquite will begin a meter conversion project for all its residential and commercial water utility customers. The company Ameresco and their subcontractor Pedal Valve (PVI) were chosen to replace outdated manual meters with upgraded meters as part of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project which will upgrade and modernize the City’s water billing infrastructure. With this AMI water meter project, customers will have access to more frequent detailed information about water consumption, enabling them to have better control over their water usage and monthly bills. New solid waste ordinance goes into effect Oct. 1


As a part of its new Clean City Initiative, the Mesquite City Council approved new requirements for its solid waste customers that go into effect Oct. 1, which include trash being secured in trash bags within an approved trash container, specific times on when the trash can be set out for collection and limits on bulky items. For more information call the Solid Waste Division at 972-216-6285. City announces sales tax activity for July 2021


The City of Mesquite’s September sales tax receipts, which represent sales activity for the month of July, is 21.5% above the amount reported for the same period last year when the pandemic restrictions were in place. The increase in sales tax activity this period is driven by home furnishings, retail sales and food and beverage services. Sales tax contributes 25% of the total revenue used to support the City’s General Fund, which supports services such as police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries and public works.
