Park named in honor of city’s first African American police officer Jon Latimore was hired in 1985 as the first African American Police Officer to serve in the Mesquite Police Department. On Sept. 7, the Mesquite City Council approved a resolution naming a future park to be located on North Bryan Avenue in his honor. He served the Mesquite community for 28 years. Learn more.

Mesquite Fire Department takes part in Dallas Stair Climb The Mesquite Fire Department (MFD) participated in the Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday, Sept. 4. MFD had 25 firefighters participating this year, the most out of the 101 fire departments represented. Ten different EMS departments and 40 different law enforcement departments also participated. Guts and Gory Zombie Run & Challenge
Experience a zombie apocalypse at the “Guts and Gory” Zombie Run and Challenge on Sept. 18 at Camp Rorie Galloway, 3100 Lawson Road. There are two ways to participate, either as a runner or as part of the zombie horde. The fee for runners is $25 during Early Bird registration until Sept. 4. Keep Mesquite Beautiful holds Trash Bash on Sept. 25Keep Mesquite Beautiful (KMB) will hold its volunteer cleanup event, Trash Bash, on Sept. 25. Trash Bash is an opportunity for families, neighbors and groups to get outside and help beautify the Mesquite community. Meter conversion project starts in October The City of Mesquite will begin a meter conversion project for all its residential and commercial water utility customers. The company Ameresco and their subcontractor Pedal Valve (PVI) were chosen to replace outdated manual meters with upgraded meters as part of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project which will upgrade and modernize the City’s water billing infrastructure. With this AMI water meter project, customers will have access to more frequent detailed information about water consumption, enabling them to have better control over their water usage and monthly bills. New solid waste ordinance goes into effect Oct. 1 As a part of its new Clean City Initiative, the Mesquite City Council approved new requirements for its solid waste customers that go into effect Oct. 1, which include trash being secured in trash bags within an approved trash container, specific times on when the trash can be set out for collection and limits on bulky items. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the City of Mesquite is encouraging residents to visit one of the Mesquite Public Libraries to sign up. To apply for a card, visit the Mesquite Main Library, 300 W. Grubb Drive, or the North Branch Library, 2600 Oates Drive. Mesquite Animal Shelter participates in Clear the Shelters Adopt the "pawfect" furry friend at the Mesquite Animal Shelter, 1650 Gross Road, during the month long Clear the Shelters event until Sept. 19.
