City Council meets Aug. 16


Mesquite City Council will meet on Monday, Aug. 16 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B followed by the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. The public attending the meeting will have the option of wearing a face covering but the city will continue to implement social distancing measures with limited seating. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister as follows: Send an email or call the City Secretary on or before 3 p.m. on Aug. 16 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216- 6244. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on Aug. 16 to the following email address: sland@cityofmesquite.com. View meeting agendas online. Mesquite celebrates 5th year of safe driving campaign


The first day of school in Mesquite was this week and the City of Mesquite encouraged safe driving with the “Drive Like Your Family Lives Here” campaign that began in 2017. This year the Mesquite Police Department and Mesquite Fire Department were at the campuses to promote the campaign and welcome students and their parents. Learn more.

Mesquite Fire Department celebrates promotions and new firefighters


The Mesquite Fire Department held a promotion/swearing-in ceremony on Aug. 5 at the Mesquite Arts Center to recognize the recent promotions of rank and new members to the department. The event celebrated 28 firefighters who have given nearly 400 years of combined service to the community. Learn more.

Mesquite continues with summer PB&J drive to help families


The City of Mesquite’s Public Safety Dispatchers recently made a generous donation of peanut butter and jelly to Sharing Life Community Outreach as a part of the city’s Spread the Love campaign. Spread the Love is a campaign held April - August that encourages the donation of peanut butter and jelly to help feed children in Mesquite who live in food insecure environments. Learn more.

Monthly virtual community health forum on safety tips by Mesquite Fire Department


As a part of its Recovery Mesquite efforts to help the community move forward and onward from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Mesquite continues the virtual Community Health Forum Series on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. The focus is on steps to take towards the prevention of house fires, health safety tips, the basics of CPR and more. New solid waste ordinance goes into effect Oct. 1


As a part of its new Clean City Initiative, the Mesquite City Council approved new requirements for its solid waste customers that go into effect Oct. 1, which include trash being secured in trash bags within an approved trash container, specific times on when the trash can be set out for collection and limits on bulky items. For more information call the Solid Waste Division at 972-216-6285. Mesquite Championship Rodeo


The Mesquite Championship Rodeo (MCR) is at the Mesquite Arena, 1818 Rodeo Drive for the summer. MCR will take place every Saturday at 7:30 p.m. until Aug. 28. For more than 60 years, MCR has entertained families with thrilling rodeo events such as saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, team roping and more. Purchase tickets.

Mesquite Arts Theatre presents the Island of Dr. Libris


The Mesquite Arts Theatre is excited to announce their next show, The Island of Dr. Libris. The summer teen show will be on Fridays and Saturdays in August at 8 p.m. at the Mesquite Arts Center Black Box Theatre and on Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $10 for kids. Remember the 4 D’s


Summer is here and that means mosquito's in Texas. Prevention is the best defense against the West Nile virus. It’s important to remember the four D’s: Dusk and dawn are the times of day mosquitoes are most active and you should try to stay indoors. Dress in long sleeves and pants when you are outside. DEET is an ingredient to look for in your insect repellent you should always wear outdoors. And drain standing water in your yard and neighborhood where mosquitoes can breed. Learn more.
