City Council meets July 19


Mesquite City Council will meet on Tuesday, July 19 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B, followed by the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. The public attending the meeting will have the option of wearing a face covering but the city will continue to implement social distancing measures with limited seating. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister as follows: Send an email or call the City Secretary on or before 3 p.m. on July 19 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216-6244. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on July 19 to the following email address: sland@cityofmesquite.com. View meeting agendas online. City Council Budget Retreat on July 17


On July 17, the City Council will hold their annual Budget Retreat at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue, in Training Rooms A and B from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public may watch the retreat on the City’s Facebook page or at www.cityofmesquite.com/WatchCouncilMeetings on the City’s website. Visit www.cityofmesquite.com/Budget to learn more about the City’s budget and see the results of the budget survey.

July 17 is first day to file as a candidate for City Council


The City of Mesquite has launched a new webpage to assist those who want to consider filing their candidacy to serve on the City Council. The 2021 City election, for the purpose of electing a Mayor and Councilmembers for Places 1 – 6, will be held on Nov. 2. The first day to file is July 17 and the last day to file is Aug.16. The webpage is www.cityofmesquite.com/CouncilCandidate and the public may contact the City Secretary’s Office at 972-216-6401 or at CouncilCandidate@cityofmesquite.com for additional information.

Mesquite hosts July 20 Business Marketing Panel


The City of Mesquite’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau along with the Mesquite Business Retention and Expansion Task Force (BRE) will host a free marketing event for the business community on Tuesday, July 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mesquite City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue in Training Rooms A & B. The Business Marketing Panel will provide businesses the opportunity to network and learn marketing tips and tricks for succeeding in the new normal. Mesquite dedicates Municipal Center in honor of former Mayor George Venner


City of Mesquite Mayor Bruce Archer honored former Mesquite Mayor George Venner on July 14 during the George A. Venner, Sr. Municipal Center dedication ceremony, presenting him with a replica of the plaque that now is displayed in the lobby of the building. In April, the City Council renamed the Municipal Center at 1515 N. Galloway Avenue in honor of Venner who served as Mayor from 1987 – 1991. Learn more.

Mesquite ISD school zone flashers activated for summer session


The Mesquite Independent School District is having special summer school sessions as part of the COVID-19 catch up. School zone flashers will run from July 7 through July 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Monday-Thursday. Mesquite employee makes Texas high school football history


City of Mesquite Parks and Recreation employee, Crystal Cooksey, is making Texas high school football history again. Cooksey will lead the first all-female officials crew on July 17 at the Sixman Coach’s Association All Star Game. Earlier this year, she became the first female in Texas to officiate a Texas High School State Championship football game when she officiated the 1A-Division II State Championship game. Learn more.

July 23 is deadline to volunteer for Addressing Mesquite Day


The 17th Addressing Mesquite Day is on Oct. 2. This annual event has volunteers organized by the City help Mesquite homeowners, including senior citizens, single parents, military veterans and the disabled and other homeowners in Mesquite in need of minor exterior home repairs, including painting the outside of a home, yard work, minor construction projects and landscape projects. Remember the 4 D’s


Summer is here and that means mosquito's in Texas. Prevention is the best defense against the West Nile virus. It’s important to remember the four D’s: Dusk and dawn are the times of day mosquitoes are most active and you should try to stay indoors. Dress in long sleeves and pants when you are outside. DEET is an ingredient to look for in your insect repellent you should always wear outdoors. And drain standing water in your yard and neighborhood where mosquitoes can breed. Learn more.
