City Council meets June 21


Mesquite City Council will meet on June 21 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5:00 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B, followed by a staff Work Session at 6:30 p.m. and the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. The public attending the meeting will have the option of wearing a face covering but the city will continue to implement social distancing measures with limited seating. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister as follows: Send an email or call the City Secretary on or before 3 p.m. on June 21 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216-6244. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on June 21 to the following email address: sland@cityofmesquite.com. View meeting agendas online. The City broadcasts meetings via Facebook Live and at www.cityofmesquite.com/WatchCouncilMeetings.

Mesquite NAACP hosts Juneteenth celebration


Celebrate Juneteenth with the whole family at Mesquite’s second annual Juneteenth Celebration. The Mesquite NAACP is hosting the celebration at Paschall Park, 1001 New Market Road, on June 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a number of vendors, including local small businesses, food, drinks, entertainment, music and games. The event is free and is perfect for the whole family. Learn more.

Mesquite Veteran's Memorial

Mesquite announces final brick sales for Mesquite Veterans Memorial


As a part of National Flag Week, the City of Mesquite has announced a limited supply of additional Mesquite Veterans Memorial bricks available for purchase. The sale will begin Tuesday, June 22 at 9 a.m. The public can visit www.MesquiteVeteransMemorial.org to order and pay for their brick. The public may also purchase a brick in person at the Parks and Recreation Administration Office, located on the first floor of George A. Venner, Sr. Municipal Center at 1515 N. Galloway Avenue. Tails and Tales Summer Reading Club


School is out and the Summer Reading Club has made it’s way to the Mesquite public library. Until July 31, kids can earn prizes by reading books and filling out their reading logs. This year’s theme “Tails and Tales” is all about animals. Watch this video to learn more.

Addressing Mesquite Day project applications due June 25


Do you or your neighbors need help with an exterior house or yard project? The 17th Addressing Mesquite Day is on Oct. 2. This annual event has volunteers organized by the City to work on minor exterior home repairs, painting and landscape projects. The last day for homeowners to complete a request form is June 25. How to file as a candidate for City Council


The City of Mesquite has launched a new webpage to assist those who want to consider filing their candidacy to serve on the City Council. The 2021 City election, for the purpose of electing a Mayor and Councilmembers for Places 1 – 6, will be held on Nov. 2. The first day to file is July 17 and the last day to file is Aug.16. The webpage is www.cityofmesquite.com/CouncilCandidate and the public may contact the City Secretary’s Office at 972-216-6401 or at CouncilCandidate@cityofmesquite.com for additional information.

Mesquite Farmers Market now open


The new Downtown Mesquite Farmers Market opened on June 12. If you missed out on the grand opening, the weekly marketplace of fresh produce and creative artisans will take place Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Nov. 27 at Front Street Station. How to apply for a Special Events Permit


With COVID restrictions easing and more events being planned, the City wants to remind the community the process of applying for a Special Events Permit for events on public property, that restrict access to public property and that have large tents or temporary stages. Learn more.

Mesquite Library holds jobseeker support sessions


The Mesquite Main Library is offering free jobseeker support sessions. Schedule a 30-minute session in person or by phone. Staff will offer assistance and resources to help with job applications resumes and practice interviews. Spread the Love is an annual campaign held April - August that encourages the donation of peanut butter and jelly as well as financial contributions to help feed children in Mesquite during the summer who live in food insecure environments. These children receive free or reduced lunch during the school year but need assistance to nutritious lunch during the summer break. Learn more.
