Boy Scouts Install 911 Location Signs

Mesquite Boy Scouts Andrew Bailey, Calen Garza, Chris Bailey and Grant Chaparro installed 911 location signs along seven park trails as part of their Eagle Scout project. The 911 location is used by operators to help identify the exact location of trail patrons for medical and environmental emergencies. The new posts, signs and materials were paid for by the City’s 4B Quality of Life Corporation Fund.

Daddy Daughter Dance

The Enchanted Evening Daddy Daughter Dance is scheduled for Friday, February 5 at the Hampton Inn & Suites, located at 1700 Rodeo Drive. Two dance sessions are available, 6-8 p.m. for girls 4-8 years old and 8:30-10:30 p.m. for girls 9-12 years old. Tickets are $15 per person, per session. Tickets may be purchased at all Recreation Centers and the Parks and Recreation Administration Office located at 1515 North Galloway Ave.

Adult Co-Ed Sports

Registration for Adult Co-ed Volleyball, Basketball and Dodgeball leagues ends Sunday, January 24. Register your team in person at any recreation center. Don't have a team?

Trail Improvements

The path between the long pedestrian bridge in Bruton Athletic Complex and short bridge to Hodges Park has been poured with new concrete. Additional backfilling and grading to fix drainage issues remains to be completed and will be performed as the weather and soil conditions allow.

New Lights at Westlake Park

The Parks and Recreation Department is installing new LED light fixtures at the Westlake Tennis Center and Westlake House parking lots and walkways. This conversion is replacing old incandescent bulbs that have poor light output and high electrical use. The new fixtures will use less electricity and have a bright light output, improving safety.

Grand Opening of Opal Lawrence Historic Park

Historic Mesquite, Inc. is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the Opal Lawrence Historical Park, 711 E. Kearney St., Saturday, January 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy refreshments, and tours of the Noah Range Farmhouse Visitors Center and newly refurbished S.D. Lawrence House. Further plans for this Mesquite treasure will also be on display.

Animal Services Pet Microchip Program

Mesquite Animal Services has microchipped 86 animals at the request of owners since the beginning of the pet microchip program in October . The cost of the chip and initial registration is $10. This service is available at the Animal Shelter during regular public hours of Monday - Friday, 11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., and Saturday 1 - 5:30 p.m. Microchips are implanted between the shoulder blades of an animal. Each microchip has a unique number which appears when scanned by a microchip scanner. This number is used to retrieve owner contact information.

Opticom Traffic Preemption Systems

The Mesquite Fire Department will begin testing the Opticom traffic preemption systems at designated intersections throughout Mesquite beginning Sunday, January 24. The Opticom system enables fire engines and ambulances to navigate congested intersections more effectively by triggering traffic signals to cycle to green in the direction of travel for emergency units.

Testing will occur every 4^th Sunday of the month in the morning. Fire Department vehicles will approach designated intersections and activate their emergency lights to trigger the Opticom system. Affected traffic lights will resume normal function shortly after emergency vehicles travel through the intersection. Emergency sirens will not be used during the testing cycle. Routine testing of the Opticom system will help reduce the possibility of vehicle accidents and improve response times to emergencies.

Protecting Property WIthin Your Home

In an effort to improve citizens’ documentation of their personal property, the Mesquite Police Department offers citizens a location to store information about their property on a secure computer server through a program called “Serial Number Central.” The program is password protected, thus after setting up an account, residents can record details about their personal belongings.
