City Council meets Feb. 1

Mesquite City Council will meet on Feb. 1 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B, followed by a Work Session at 6:30 p.m. and the Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. All persons present at the meeting location must observe social distancing by remaining a minimum of six (6) feet from other meeting participants and must wear a covering over their nose and mouth. Members of the public desiring to comment during Citizens Forum must preregister as follows: Send an email or call the City Secretary on or before 3 p.m. on Feb. 1 at sland@cityofmesquite.com or 972-216-6244. Provide the City Secretary with your name and address. Comments on agenda items may be made during the meeting or by submission on or before 3 p.m. on Feb. 1 to the following email address: sland@cityofmesquite.com. View meeting agendas online. Mesquite appoints first African American female of the Civil Service Commission and Personnel/ Trial Board


The Mesquite City Council unanimously appointed Yolanda Shepard on Jan. 19 to the City of Mesquite’s Civil Service Commission and Personnel/Trial Board, making her the first African American female resident to serve on the volunteer board. Shepard was sworn-in during a brief ceremony at the office of Mayor Bruce Archer on Jan. 25. Learn more and watch the swearing in ceremony.

Mesquite Firefighters Association and Police Association donate to Mesquite NAACP

Mesquite Police and Fire Associations donate to Mesquite NAACP mental health scholarship


The Mesquite Police Association and the Mesquite Firefighters Association-Local 1518 teamed up to donate $1,000 towards the Mesquite NAACP’s Mental Health Scholarship Fund that offers funding to students in the Mesquite Independent School District who want to pursue a degree towards a mental health profession. Let's Glow Crazy

Let’s Glow Crazy Virtual Dance Party


The City of Mesquite Parks and Recreation’s annual Daddy Daughter Dance and Mother Son Dance will be transformed into a free virtual family dance party on Saturday, March 6 from 7 - 8 p.m. The theme for the event will be Glow Crazy and the event can be streamed for free via the City’s Facebook page. No registration is necessary to participate, however optional $10 "Glowtastic Party Bags" are available. Learn more.

Free CDBG COVID-19 programs for Mesquite residents


Qualified Mesquite residents have access to a variety of recovery programs, like mental health counseling, utility and housing assistance and much more through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The City of Mesquite received over $1,500,000 in Community Development Block Grant – COVID-19 (CDBG-CV) funds for emergency assistance to individuals, families, public service agencies and small businesses directly impacted by COVID-19. Westover Greenbelt Park features refurbished shelter


The picnic shelter at Westover Greenbelt Park has been refurbished, at no cost to Mesquite tax payers. The City of Mesquite’s Parks and Recreation Department was able to use funds from the City’s 4B Budget which is funded from sales tax, not property tax. The cost of the project was $17,000 to refurbish the existing roof of the shelter by using the steel structure already in place and putting a new roof on top. The efforts of staff saved the City more than $80,000. Learn more.

Mesquite Arts Center offers free Valentine’s Day Craft


The Mesquite Arts Council is offering a free Valentine’s Kids craft, as part of their Tote-and-Go Service on Feb. 1. This event is first-come, first-serve. Kits will be available for pick up starting at 12 p.m. inside the Mesquite Arts Center front lobby through a contactless service. Learn more.
