City Council meets Dec. 14


Mesquite City Council will hold a Special Council meeting on Dec. 14 in Training Rooms A and B at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue to receive an update on a plan addressing New Year's Eve fireworks and gunfire. The Meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Members of the public and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. All persons present at the meeting location must observe social distancing by remaining a minimum of six (6) feet from other meeting participants and must wear a covering over their nose and mouth. The City broadcasts meetings via Facebook Live and at www.cityofmesquite.com/WatchCouncilMeetings.

Update from Councilmembers


The City of Mesquite is producing video updates hosted by members of the City Council in the districts they represent. Each video focuses on various issues and topics in their district as well as news items that affect the entire city. The most recent district videos are hosted by Councilmember Kenny Green, District 2 and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem, Councilmember Dan Aleman, District 6. Councilman Green shares updates on the reopened Golden Chick restaurant, the Real. Texas. Roads. program and how the City is cleaning up drainage channels. Watch the District 2 update. Mesquite Neighborhood Services presents quarterly report


Neighborhood Services presented the City of Mesquite’s quarterly report during the City Council meeting on Dec. 7. In the fourth quarter, the number of environmental code violations decreased from the same quarter in 2019 and 86% of cases were successfully resolved through voluntary compliance by property owners. Watch the full presentation to City Council.

Mesquite hosts online workshops on solid waste services


The City of Mesquite will host two online public workshops to gather community input on its solid waste services as part of its effort in developing a 20-year master plan for the solid waste services it provides to residential and commercial customers. The workshops will be Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. and Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. Details on accessing the workshops is available at www.cityofmesquite.com/SolidWastePlan.

Utility Billing Office offering longer-term payment plans


On Jan. 5, 2021, the City will resume water disconnections if there is a past due balance. Longer-term payment plans are available to help residents who are struggling to pay their City water bills due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The City can offer a payment plan that fits their unique situation. Call the Utility Billing Office at 972-216-6208 (press 0) to discuss your options.

The City is encouraging citizens to shop local and shop Mesquite during the holiday season to help business owners and the local economy. As the public health pandemic continues, remember the "3 W's" while out shopping in public. Remember to wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance by staying six feet apart from others. The Mesquite Arts Council is offering a free virtual workshop celebrating the season. On Dec. 16 at 12 p.m., join the Mesquite Arts Center on their YouTube page and learn how to create a marble paint ornament using acrylic paint and glass ornaments. Learn more.

Deadline to buy Mesquite Veterans Memorial bricks Dec. 18


The City of Mesquite extended the deadline for the public to purchase a personalized brick to be installed at the new Mesquite Veterans Memorial to Dec. 18. The cost of each 4” x 8” brick is $50 and includes three lines for a personalized inscription. The public can order a brick at www.MesquiteVeteransMemorial.org.

Gather the family around the computer for this year’s virtual Carols and Cocoa event. On Dec. 19, Downtown Mesquite will host a virtual singalong at 7 p.m. You can join in on the fun early. For the 12 days leading up to the Virtual Carols and Cocoa event, Downtown Mesquite will post a hint to each verse of the new 12 Days of Mesquite Christmas carol on their Facebook page. The first person to guess the featured business and that day’s verse correctly will win a Downtown Mesquite campfire mug and ornament. Learn more.

Cold weather tips


Winter has arrived and with freezing temperatures comes the risk of frozen pipes. Here are a few precautions that will help residents decrease the chances of having plumbing problems. Insulate exposed pipes or faucets, disconnect and drain outdoor hoses, open doors below sinks, let the water run temporarily and locate the main water shut-off valve. Taking these precautions will help protect water pipes throughout the winter season.
