City Council meets Oct. 19

Mesquite City Council will meet on Oct. 19 at City Hall, 757 N. Galloway Avenue. The Pre-Meeting begins at 5 p.m. in Training Rooms A and B, followed by the Regular Meeting at 7 pm. In the Council Chambers. Members of the public, applicants and interested parties may attend the meeting in person. All persons present at the meeting location must observe social distancing by remaining a minimum of six (6) feet from other meeting participants and must wear a covering over their nose and mouth. Mesquite announces Russell Wilson as new Fire Chief

Russell “Rusty” Wilson will become the new Mesquite Fire Chief on Nov.1 and will oversee 206 firefighters and seven stations for a fire department that responded to nearly 19,000 calls for service in 2019. Wilson, who has more than 30 years of experience in the fire service profession, was previously the Fire Chief for the City of Katy, TX. Learn more.

Mesquite Police Department now on social media

The Mesquite Police Department has created four new social media platforms. Follow MPD on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor and LinkedIn to keep up to date on the latest police information. Residential recycling resumes Oct. 19 and City hosts Mesquite Recycles Day Nov. 14

The City of Mesquite announced it will resume its curbside recycling program on Oct. 19. The residential recycling program has been suspended since late March due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic stay at home orders. The City also announced Mesquite Recycles Day will return on Nov. 14 at Poteet High School, 3300 Poteet Drive, from 8 a.m. - noon.  Learn more.

Mesquite seeks public input on ADA survey

As part of formalizing an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan, the City of Mesquite is looking for the community to participate in an ADA survey to address any specific concerns regarding accessibility. The survey will be available from Oct. 19 to Nov. 6.  at www.cityofmesquite.com/ADA and printed versions are available at City facilities. Learn more.

STAR Transit offers free rides to voters

STAR Transit is offering free, round-trip rides to local polling places, encouraging all eligible voters to participate in this year’s general election. The free service is available during early voting Tuesday, Oct.13, through Friday, Oct. 30, and on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. City earns 2020 Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award

The City of Mesquite has earned the 2020 Achievement of Excellence in Procurement (AEP) Award, making the City one of only 46 agencies in Texas and one of only 69 cities in the United States and Canada to receive the award. City receives Certificate of Distinction from GTOT

The City of Mesquite has been awarded the Certificate of Distinction from the Government Treasurers’ Organization of Texas (GTOT) for maintaining a comprehensive written investment policy that fully complies with the Texas Public Funds Investment Act (PFIA). Monthly sales tax report

The City of Mesquite’s October sales tax receipts, which represent sales activity for the month of August, is 3.0% above the amount reported for the same period last year. Total fiscal year sales tax collections for the City are almost 1% above last year’s collections. Sales tax contributes 25% of the total revenue used to support the City’s General Fund, which supports services such as police, fire, parks and recreation, libraries and public works. Learn more.

Mesquite residents have access to COVID-19 recovery caseworker

As a part of their ongoing Recovery Mesquite efforts, the
City of Mesquite announced Mesquite residents have
access to a Spanish bilingual caseworker to aid them in
submitting applications through Catholic Charities Dallas
(CCD) for COVID-19 economic assistance funds for
rental or mortgage payments, utility bills and other related expenses. Learn more.
