SBA rolls out $100M grant program to help small businesses after Covid-19

Mesquite, TX – June 10, 2021 – The Small Business Administration (SBA) is launching a $100 million grant program to connect small businesses with federal relief programs. Through the Community Navigator Pilot Program, the SBA plans to strengthen their outreach to small businesses in underserved communities by partnering with states, local governments, SBA resource partners and other organizati

Previous rounds of economic relief helped millions of small businesses in 2020. However, many minority-owned businesses and mom and pop shops missed out on the assistance. To better reach these small businesses, the Community Navigator Pilot Program will offer grants of $1 million to $5 million to eligible organizations with deep roots in these communities to serve as an informal connection to SBA resources.

Mesquite, TX – May 20, 2021 – There will be a free Mesquite Job Fair, at the Mesquite Convention Center and Exhibit Hall, 1700 Rodeo Drive, on Wednesday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Mesquite Business Retention and Expansion Task Force (BRE) will host a great opportunity for both job seekers of all ages and employers looking to hire. Attendees can schedule free transportation through STAR Transit by downloading the STARNow app and using the promocode COMJOBFAIR or by calling 877-631-5278. There will also be translation services on-site to assist with Spanish-speaking applicants.

The job fair will feature a “how to” section to offer tips to teenagers looking for work and new job seekers. This area of the fair will give guidance on resume writing, interview techniques and counseling on how to dress for interviews.

Kim Buttram, Director of Economic Development, said, “This job fair is for job seekers of all situations. We will have job openings for seasoned employees and first-time job seekers as well as for teenagers. There will be on-the-spot interviews by companies seeking to fill positions immediately.” Buttram shared that they are eagerly looking to recruit employers with job openings to participate in the job fair.

The Mesquite Job Fair is presented by the BRE, which consists of the City of Mesquite Economic Development Department, Mesquite Independent School District, Dallas College-Eastfield Campus, Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas, and the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce. 

The job fair will offer free goodie bags to the first 900 attendees filled with complimentary items from the BRE and their partners.

Pfizer Vaccine Opportunity for Mesquite ISD Students and Families

Mesquite ISD is partnering with the City of Mesquite to distribute 1,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to any interested Mesquite ISD students and their family members ages 12 and up. Vaccine distribution will take place at the K. David Belt Professional Development Center on Saturday, May 15, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment is required. A parent/guardian must be present for any student receiving the vaccine. MISD is pleased to offer this opportunity to our families following the City of Mesquite’s generous donation of its current vaccine supply.

The Pfizer vaccine requires a second dose for maximum effectiveness. Those receiving a vaccine on Saturday will be contacted with details when it is time for their second dose.

The K. David Belt Professional Development Center is located at 3819 Town Crossing Blvd. Please enter through the door that faces Outback Steakhouse. Vaccinations will be administered in the Vision Room. Please wear a mask when in the building. Adults should bring a photo ID.
