How to Adopt

Most animals are available for adoption consideration right away. However, many animals must stay at the shelter and complete a stray hold period.

ADOPTION PENDING CONTRACTS

If an animal is still in their stray hold period and you would like to adopt, you may complete an Adoption Pending Contract at the front desk.  This is a contract stating that MAS will only adopt that animal to you and that you will return to adopt the animal on the agreed-upon date if an owner does not reclaim the pet before the stray hold expires.  An animal can only have ONE Adoption Pending contract attached to it.  If the person who signed the Adoption Pending Contract does not return on the agreed-upon date by the end of the day, the animal becomes available again the following business day on a first-come, first-served basis.

As you consider welcoming a new family member into your home, please keep in mind the following:

  • All pets will be sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped before they go home with you.
  • Animals determined to be spayed or neutered prior to impound will be issued a voucher and required to obtain a rabies vaccine within 24 hours of adoption.
  • Many of the available pets were found as strays. There is little or no knowledge of their temperament, health or behaviors.
  • All pets are adopted on an "as is" basis. The city of Mesquite offers no warranty or refund.
  • Establishing a relationship with a veterinarian is an important part of pet ownership.  It is recommended that all newly adopted animals visit a full service veterinarian within seven days.
Adoptions are done on a first-come, first-served basis in person. It is important to us that you are choosing a pet because their activity level and temperament matches what works for you and your family and not just based on looks, age or availability. Please ask an MAS employee for help in choosing a pet.
