Termination Procedures

A family will be submitted for termination if they are believed to be in violation of the family obligations. After Mesquite Housing Division has made an initial determination to terminate assistance the family will receive a letter citing the program violation. If the family feels that the violation did not occur or believe that such violations are not grounds for termination they may dispute the findings and ask that their participation in the program continue.

In order to dispute the findings the family must request, either in writing or verbally, for an informal hearing. The purpose of an informal hearing is to make a final determination of eligibility to receive housing assistance. At the informal hearing, you and the Mesquite Housing Division will be given the opportunity to present evidence to the members of the Housing Board and may question any witnesses. The hearing is only for determining if the violations occurred and if such violations are grounds for termination assistance or denying any continued assistance.

If an informal hearing is not requested the housing office will declare the family ineligible. The termination only concerns the family's eligibility to receive rental assistance through the housing choice voucher program. Only a landlord may file for an eviction against a tenant.
